In 1969, at forty-seven, Perillat left a career as a professor of philosophy and college administrator and moved into a converted goat shed on Maverick Road in Woodstock, New York. Known around town as “Woodstock Bob,” he painted amid the political and social upheaval of the period, making frequent trips to New York City to see the galleries. Rauschenberg and Johns were particular influences on these first paintings.
