The artist

A philosopher who became a painter at forty-seven

Robert Perillat earned a Ph.D. in philosophy at Notre Dame and spent fifteen years as a professor and college administrator before walking away in 1969 to paint. He worked in near-poverty and largely outside the market — first in a converted goat shed in Woodstock, then in a one-room studio at Stinson Beach, and finally in an industrial loft in Brooklyn, where he produced his largest and most ambitious canvases.

He never sought gallery representation. When he did show his work, it was recognized: first prize in the juried Discoveries exhibition in New York in both 1986 and 1988, selected by Village Voice critic Peter Frank.
